[VVS Laxman - Hooked on email]

    Nidhi Taparia

There was more mail waiting for him in his inbox than the number of runs he got against the Aussies. And though his fingers don’t move quite as quickly as his feet, India’s latest batting sensation, V V S Laxman, insists that he replies to all his emails.

“Email is a great way to stay in touch with friends and family,’’ says Laxman, “But during the Australian tour, I just didn’t get the time, and my mailbox was completely flooded by the end of the tour.’’ According to him, the entire Indian cricket team is pretty net savvy. “During breaks and vacations, we correspond with each other via email.’’

Apart from email, Laxman likes to surf through cricket sites. “Just before the tour, I logged on to CricketNext, Total Cricket, Cricinfo and Baggy Green. While Baggy Green is great site for information on Australian cricket, the other sites have a lot of statistics, instant scores, and live online commentary for matches all over the world. There is a lot to learn, and a great deal of interesting reportage to read on the Internet.”

He usually logs on to the Net before he logs off for the night. His surfing routine is simple. “Check mail and then maybe look at a few sites that catch my fancy, like holiday sites on Yahoo.”

Laxman doesn’t chat much. “I am not really into instant messengers or chatting randomly because I don’t have the time. But when I did chats on Total Cricket and Rediff, what I really liked was that I was getting the opinion of the whole country and enjoyed how positive they were about the game after the tour. It felt good.”

V V S Laxman “I have never chatted with strangers… In fact, I am not very comfortable giving out my email address to all and sundry or fans. I just have one Yahoo account and don’t really separate my personal and professional life (when it comes to email), so I would hate to lose that privacy.”

While cricket occupies most of his thoughts about the future, he is also excited about an online family venture. ‘‘My family and I are looking forward to setting up a site to sell insurance policies online once the laws are in place.’’

One thing he would love to do online, and hasn’t found the time for, is shop. “There are so many interesting sites and such a lot of exciting stuff to pick.’’
