We have a guestbook in our rainforest home. So if you come to visit us sometime, you will have to fill in details about your visit, how much you liked our home and the food that was served to you. Bubbles is particular about the last point since he personally supervises the kitchen.

The purpose of having a guestbook on your web site is exactly the same. You have a great looking site and a visitor wants to leave a message for you. This is when a guestbook comes handy since it is the ideal way of getting a visitor to participate and give them a chance to interact.

WEB RESOURCES:

There are different ways in which you can incorporate a guestbook. One is to write the code for it yourself and host it with your server. The other, easier and painless way is to link to a guestbook that is provided by another site. Usually, guestbooks are available for free.

If you are the self sufficient kind (like Bubbles) you will probably insist on writing the code yourself. Here is a tutorial on how you can write a simple guestbook script. You will now have to install this script in your server’s CGI bin directory. You will first have to find out whether your hosting service provider for your site, provides this facility.

The easier way for people like me is to add a guestbook that is hosted elsewhere. There are many companies that will host your guestbook. In this case, the guestbook page will reside on the hosting company’s server, saving you the hassle of creating your own. Or else, they will provide you with a code that you will have to paste into your Web page.

Find out more about free guestbooks from sites like Brave Net that allows you to customise the page, add background colours and even music. Pathfinder allows you to create a guestbook and then copy the code to your web site.

You can also check out Guestcities and Dreambook which has a useful help section to guide you. All these sites are free but require you to register for a member ID and a password.

This should help you to install a guestbook successfully and we do hope you will issue us with a personal invitation to visit your site. We will definitely leave a nice note in your guestbook!
