At least five people were killed and 143 others injured after a strong earthquake of magnitude 6.3 struck several provinces across Afghanistan in the wee hours of Monday, according to the Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority (ANDMA).
The city is a home to about 90,000 residents. The earthquake was followed by four earthquakes of magnitude 5 or higher in the area after the first tremor.

The quake triggered panic among people, with many in Delhi and the National Capital Region reporting shaking of furniture.

In Delhi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah assessed the situation in Joshimath and steps taken to ameliorate people's hardship at a meeting attended by Union ministers Nitin Gadkari, R K Singh, Bhupendra Yadav and Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and top officials.
There were no immediate reports of any loss of life or damage to property.
The epicentre of the quake was in Nepal and it occurred at a depth of 33 kilometres, the NCS said.
The first quake, a medium intensity one of 4.5 magnitude, hit the Haryana city at 9.08 pm at a depth of 5 km. The second quake was of lower intensity of magnitude 2.9 and occurred at the same location at 10 pm, the NCS said.
