Patnaik, a 1985 batch IPS officer from the Union Territories cadre, replaces Alok Verma, who has been named as the new Central Bureau of Investigation director.
Incumbent Amulya Patnaik demits office on Saturday.
After meeting Shah, Patnaik said he briefed the minister on the current situation in Hauz Qazi area.
Shah is also believed to have directed the police commissioner to take all possible steps to ensure peace at JNU.
An order issued by the Home Department of the Delhi government said the 1985-batch AGMUT cadre officer is being appointed to the new post with 'immediate effect'.
The home minister also said the central government will not tolerate such incidents and the guilty will not be spared.
"In the last 60 hours, no incident has taken place. We have made arrangements as there are Friday prayers today. Through the extensive outreach programme done by us and the interaction with the people, we get to know that everybody wants peace. We are moving fast towards normalcy.
