Sylvia D'Souza

Magician David Blake is very successful in dating attractive women in the model world. Posing as a psychiatrist or a fortuneteller, he promises to read their minds. And he deceives them by rolling off lines that will hold good for almost everyone…
"You are someone that nobody understands. No one can get to know you because you keep everyone out of your world. You are too complicated for anyone to comprehend." If you're a woman, I'm sure you're thinking that it's you. I did too.

It is a trick! But David has stories of women who start screaming: "You have some serious powers!" and "You better watch what you do with that gift!"
Why are we so fascinated whenever somebody begins to unravel our mind? And if we are so interested in understanding ourselves, why don't we do it on our own? Perhaps we cannot trust our own mind to understand itself. But then are we doomed to trust the charm of people like David Blake?
Fortunately, for those of us who wish to dig into the mystery of our self, there is recourse. And it's nothing but the one tonic for all ailments, the Internet.
'Know your mind', declares one site. All you have to do here is answer questions that are grouped into categories, each dealing with a specific psychological trait. Very comprehensive.
Then there are sites that claim to delve into your subconscious by analysing your dreams. Who hasn't heard of Freud's The Interpretation of Dreams? If you dream that your teeth are falling out, it means that you may have an upsetting experience; to have your teeth brushed means you will have to fight for what is yours and toothlessness portends powerlessness over progress.

You can also find your 'True self' with the help of the Enneagram tool. Of the nine types of people, which type are you? The personality five seemed the closest bet for me. 'The Thinker tries to figure out life. The Thinker has a compulsive need to know and understand the universe, to be self-sufficient, to be left alone and to avoid not having the answer or looking foolish.'
There are other methods that can help you answer the 'Who am I?' question. Personology holds that outward appearance, especially the face, is the key to a person's predominant temper and character. 'People with thin, soft, looser or porcelain-like skin tend to be more impressionable both emotionally and physically....'
Will these sites really provide the answer? Psychological Q&A is used by professionals too. So there is no doubt about the method. As to the accuracy of these tests, there is no guarantee when you are dealing with the human mind.
However, if you understand the fundamental ideas behind such methods of self-discovery, you can fine-tune the answers these sites have given you. Good reading can begin at The Sigmund Freud Archives that has links pointing to resources related to his works. And the Jung Page encourages new psychological ideas and conversations about what it means to be human in our time and place. It also features abstracts and articles.
Go ahead: Know thyself.
