Bubbles: Hi everyone (entering the chat room)
Pickles: Hey. A/S/L please…
Bubbles: Well, last time I checked it was fine…
Pickles: ROTFL
Bubbles: Oh… there's no need to get violent…
Pickles: HHOK ;-)
Bubbles: Hhuh?
Pickles: You're a real dork… KOTC for you…
Bubbles was very confused with the way the conversation was going and turned to me for help.
Some chat users are not so merciful on newbies and literally turn violent if you make a faux pas. So make sure you brush up your ABCs and ASLs before you turn to chat...
WEB RESOURCES:
Firstly, the types of chat - HTML, Java, iChat, IRC and ICQ - are all described here. You can also visit this extensive glossary to find out more about different online chats.
Virtual chat rooms are filled with lingo and abbreviations also called emoticons - get up to speed with this guide.
Find more on chat lingo in iVillage and on Rediff Chat.
Do you know that typing in capitals is rude while chatting? It is a good idea to pick up some general netiquette rules when you are online and I have already dealt extensively with this topic on May 31.
Since giving out your real name is not recommended, choose your username carefully. How do you choose a username and password? These are small but helpful tips that might help. Most chat sites will have their own set of rules, FAQs and tips. You can check the ICQ site for an example of their chat features and tips. Active Worlds also has some tips for beginners.
So, FWIW, I think that these links should make it easier for you to enter the world of online chatting. IMHO, it is always better to be prepared when stepping into alien territory. Otherwise, like Bubbles you will either be speechless or very confused!
