The Delhi high court Friday asked the Centre to inform whether it wishes to withdraw its 2017 affidavit in which it had submitted that marital rape cannot be made a criminal offence as it could become a phenomenon which may destabilise the institution of marriage and an easy tool for harassing husbands.
The Supreme Court on Thursday said the authorities were "not interested" and the people have been "left to suffer".
Vedanta had sought handing over of the plant for three months saying it requires two months to start the unit and the company should be allowed to run it for four weeks to ascertain whether its polluting or not. The interim plea by Vedanta was opposed by Tamil Nadu government which claimed before a bench headed by Justice R F Nariman that the plant had been 'polluting consistently'.
The bench issued notice to the Meghalaya government, the centre and others seeking their response on various issues connected with coal mining in the state and posted the matter for hearing February 19.

The top court, which was hearing a public interest litigation and several intervention pleas of activists and lawyers, was told that no fair trial was possible in Uttar Pradesh as the investigation has been allegedly botched up.
A bench headed by Chief Justice N V Ramana told Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre, that if the government re-thinks about filing a detailed affidavit in the case, he can mention the matter before it.
The apex court said it would endeavour to constitute the larger bench at the earliest to hear the matter.
The apex court also observed that the compensation is not the remedy for the suicides.
The Supreme Court sought response on a plea of an alleged rape victim.
