Experience in senior level will help in U-19 World Cup: Sarfaraz

Rediff.com14 Jan 2016

Gearing up to compete in his second Under-19 World Cup, India's Sarfaraz Khan says the experience he gained through playing at senior level in domestic cricket could be beneficial to him when the junior tournament begins in Bangladesh later this month. Sarfaraz, who turns out for Virat Kohli's Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League, insisted he had an unfinished business at hand in Bangladesh. "Our hopes of defending the title in 2014 were dashed when we lost to England in the quarter-finals," Sarfaraz was quoted as saying in a ICC media release.

Former Afghanistan skipper Nawroz Mangal, under whose leadership his side secured an ODI status in the 2009 World Cup Qualifiers and then qualified for the 2010 World T20 event, has announced his retirement from international cricket with immediate effect in order to take up a role of the national chief selector. While confirming the news of Mangal's appointment in the selection panel, Shafiqullah Stanikzai, the Afghanistan Cricket Board's chief executive officer, said it is an honour for Afghanistan cricket that a player like the 32-year-old, who has a big fan following and respect among others, is the chief selector.

India Colts eye for group toppers spot as they face Nepal

Rediff.com31 Jan 2016

Having already assured a quarter-final berth, Indian team will be aiming to top their pool when they square off against a spirited Nepal in the final group league encounter of the ICC U-19 World Cup, on Monday. Rahul Dravid's boys have steamrolled their earlier opponents beating Ireland by 79 runs and New Zealand by a whopping 120-run margin. With Nepal also having qualified for the quarterfinals, tomorrow's match will decide which team will top Group D. The group champion will face either Namibia or Bangladesh in the quarter-final after defending champions South Africa crashed out on Sunday. On paper, an India versus Nepal cricketing contest should have been declared as a mismatch but the teenagers from the Himalayan nation have been the 'surprise package' of the tournament so far, defeating New Zealand and Ireland with minimum fuss.

U-19 World Cup: India favourites to win final against West Indies

U-19 World Cup: India favourites to win final against West Indies

Rediff.com13 Feb 2016

India's amazing track record and an unbeaten run in the tournament makes coach Rahul Dravid's boys overwhelming favourites to defeat the West Indies in the final of the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup in Mirpur on Sunday. India is on a 15-match winning streak since losing to England in the quarter-final of the previous edition in the United Arab Emirates two years ago. It has won 20 of its 21 one-day matches since January 2014. In the current tournament, India breezed through Group D with an all-win record against New Zealand, Nepal and Ireland, before crushing Namibia by 197 runs in the quarter-final and Sri Lanka by 97 runs in the semi-final. However, past achievements alone don't guarantee success in sport and the West Indies has done enough in the tournament so far to suggest it can go on to win its maiden title in the competition.
