At least 26 passengers, including ten women, were killed when a bus carrying a marriage party plunged into a pond in Kamrup district of Assam, the police said on Tuesday. The bus, carrying nearly 40 passengers from Guwahati to Dihu in Rangia sub-division of the district, fell into the 40 feet deep pond on Monday night when a wooden bridge it was crossing gave in. The accident occurred at Rajabari on Hajo-Guwahati road. Among the victims were the bridegroom Naba Kumar Sarma.

A civilian was killed in the crossfire between the police and two militants of the United Liberation Front of Asom at Sualkuchi in Kamrup district of Assam.The slain civilian was identified as Maniram Rabha, a rickshaw puller. One of the two militants who were engaged in the gunfight was apprehended. According to the police, the militants were extorting money from a business establishment in the town when they were accosted.

A major disaster was averted in Assam on Saturday with the recovery of a powerful plastic bomb near Rangiya wholesale market, on the eve of the bi-weekly market in Kamrup district.An anonymous caller rang up the army's 107 engineering regiment around 6.30 am and informed that a bomb had been planted in the market, defence sources said.A search operation was launched by the Army with the help of the police and the improvised explosive devise was recovered.
