Malhotra was administered the oath of office and secrecy in a ceremony held at court number 1 in the apex court.
She is the first woman lawyer to enter the top judiciary directly.
"Don't know any finer judge than Justice Indu Malhotra," Chief Justice S A Bobde said on Friday as the first woman lawyer to be appointed directly as a judge of the Supreme Court sat on the bench along with him for the last time before her retirement.
While recusing herself from the matter, she said that she had earlier represented a party in the case as a lawyer.
Malhotra will be the first woman judge to be appointed to the top post directly from the bar.
Justice S A Bobde, who is heading the inquiry panel, has appointed Justice Malhotra to the committee.
Along with her, Uttarakhand high court Chief Justice K M Joseph has also been cleared for elevation to the apex court.
Justice Surya Kant has been appointed as the 53rd Chief Justice of India, succeeding Justice Bhushan R Gavai. He will assume office on November 24 and serve until February 9, 2027.
He will hold the office till February 9, 2027.
Justice Surya Kant, who was elevated as a judge of the Supreme Court on May 24, 2019, would have a tenure of over 1.2 years as the CJI. He is due to retire on February 9, 2027.
