The Central Bureau of Investigation has directed Karunakar Reddy, one of the mining tycoons-turned-politicians Reddy brothers of Bellary, to appear before it on September 16 in connection with the illegal mining case.

After Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, petrol price has crossed the Rs 100-per-litre mark in Leh, in almost all districts of Andhra Pradesh and parts of Telangana after fuel prices were again hiked on Friday. Petrol price was increased by 27 paise per litre and diesel by 28 paise a litre, according to a price notification of state-owned fuel retailers. The hike - 18th in the last one month - took fuel prices across the country to a historic high. In Delhi, petrol hit an all-time high of Rs 94.76 a litre, while diesel is now priced at Rs 85.66 per litre.

Four persons were killed and five injured when a five-storeyed under-construction building collapsed and fell on a hostel in Bellary, Karnataka, said the police. The mishap took place in Gandhinagar area of the city on Tuesday night. The dead included a 22-year-old student of the hostel. An injured worker rescued from the debris told the police that at least 20 people were still trapped under the debris. Rescue operations are going on.

Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa on Tuesday said the central leadership of the Bharatiya Janata Party had discussed with him before finalising the names of two "low profile" party workers as candidates for the June 19 Rajya Sabha polls from the state. The Supreme Court on Thursday cancelled 49 mining leases due to illegalities in Bellary, Tumkur and Chitradurga districts of Karnataka, but allowed resumption of activity in mines with lesser illegalities, as recommended by a Central Empowered Committee. CEC had categorised the mines in the area in three categories -- A, B and C. The mines with least or no irregularities were categorised as 'A' and those with maximum illegalities were placed in category 'C'.
