Last November, the Ganga was declared as a 'National River' and the NGRBA was set up as an empowered planning, implementing and monitoring authority for the Ganga River for which this year's budget has a special provision of Rs 250 crore. The urn containing the ashes will be brought to Jabalpur on February 17 from Allahabad, where the Maharishi was cremated, said Maharshi Sansthan founder member S K Nigam. Mahesh Yogi passed away in Netherlands and his last rites were performed on February 11 on the bank of river Ganga in Allahabad.

Official sources said Kawadias, devotees of Lord Shiva, have been thronging Gangotri area during the last decade. On a single day in the annual Kanwad season (July-August), nearly 2,000 to 3,000 Kawadias visit the area, causing ecological concerns. Besides restricting the number of tourists to 150, the entry of mules and horses has also been banned in Gangotri area, Barfal said. To discourage tourists from visiting Gangotri regularly, the entry fee is also being hiked.
