Nine persons including four police personnel were injured in an improvised explosive device (IED) explosion in Pakistan's northwestern province Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Wednesday, local police said.

The incident took place on the busy Bannu-DI Khan Road near a fruit and vegetable market in Serai Naurang town in Lakki Marwat district, district police spokesperson Qudratullah Khan said.

He said according to initial information, the attackers targeted a police patrol team from Shaheed Asmatullah Khan Khattak police station.

Khan said the van in which the team was patrolling was also damaged in the explosion.

He said the assailants had fitted an IED to a motorcycle to target the police van that was passing through the area.

Bannu Regional Police Officer Sajjad Khan visited the injured at the hospital and directed the administration to provide the best possible medical treatment, according to a statement.

Speaking on the occasion, he said such cowardly acts by terrorists would not shatter the resolve of the police force, asserting that police are fully prepared and committed to foil nefarious plans of enemies of peace.
