Tourism Minister Subodh Kant Sahai, who is embroiled in a controversy over allocation of a coal block in Jharkhand, was on Friday cornered over the letter he had written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, recommending a company in which his brother is a director. "This debate is sandwiched between a Delhi high court judgment and a bunch of lies being spread by the BJP. Parliament is not able to function due to their lies even as the whole country is watching," Sahai said.

"Foreign tourist arrivals have increased considerably in the recent years from about 3.46 million in 2004 to 5.08 million in 2007. During January and July 2008, the FTA was around 3.14 million as compared to 2.38 million during the corresponding period of previous year," Prabhakar Dubey, director in the ministry, said at a conference in Shillong. Along with FTAs, the number of domestic tourists have also risen from 366 million in 2004 to 526 million last year.

The new amendments to tourist visa regulations, which are part of the stricter visa regime to come into force from August this year are aimed at combating visa trading and would not impact tourism, Brigadier Nasser Awadh Al Minhali, Director Gen of Abu Dhabi Naturalisation and Residency said.
