In a move that may cripple the nation's oil and gas production, the shipping ministry has issued new norms for operation of vessels in the Indian waters that will force leading operators like Oil and Natural Gas Corp and Reliance Industries to shut offshore operations.
DG Shipping had in May banned operations of all vessels that are more than 25 years old. ONGC has more than 100 vessels operating off the East and West coast providing supporting services to oil and gas production. A Reliance Industries executive said the company faced a similar fate for its 40-plus vessels working on bringing the gas field in Krishna Godavari basin to production.
Shipping ministry officials said a new alignment for the canal would require fresh geological studies like soil testing, wave and sedimentation testing and, most importantly, an environmental impact assessment.
In addition, India has agreed that it will charge same rates to both domestic and Pakistan vessels.
