Situation worsens in flood-hit Punjab, Haryana

The situation in flood ravaged districts of Punjab and Haryana further worsened on Friday as fresh breaches in Hansi Butana canal in Kaithal and Ghaggar in Sangrur district left several villages marooned. A 15 feet breach occurred in Hansi Butana canal, some four km from Kaithal town in Haryana, inundating nearly 40 villages badly, officials said. Two breaches of approximately 50 to 60 feet have been created due to gushing waters in Ghaggar River at Rasoli and Naiwala village

Venice has been hit by the second worst floods on record, leaving an 'indelible wound' on the historic Italian city. Water flooded the city's historic basilica and left many of its squares and alleyways deep underwater. City officials said the tide peaked at 187 cm (6.14 ft) at 10.50 pm (local time), just short of the record 194 cm set in 1966.

Fourty-four people, 41 of them school children from classes 9 and 10, are feared killed as the Gujarat State Transport bus they were travelling in fell into the main Naramada canal near Vadodara on Wednesday morning. The bus, carrying 61 passengers, fell into the canal in Bodeli area after the driver lost control. Four passengers have been rescued after the mishap. The school children were on their way to school for their examinations when the accident occurred.
