A journalist working for the Voice of America was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in northwest Pakistan on Tuesday, said the police. Mukarram Khan Atif was attacked at a mosque near his home in Shabqadar town, 35 km from Peshawar, the capital of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province. Two gunmen on motorcycles arrived at the mosque during evening prayers. One of them entered the mosque and shot Atif in the head before fleeing, said the police.

German weekly Stern reported that its China correspondent Janis Vougioukas was among a dozen foreign journalists detained by police as they visited the "Peace Cinema" square in Shanghai to watch a protest demonstration. "They were taken to a nearby police station, questioned in an underground bunker for three hours and set free after signing an admission that they intentionally violated the Chinese rules for foreign correspondents," the weekly said.

Pakistan will not take military action against the Haqqani network despite growing pressure from the United States, even as the country's top military commanders have agreed on the need to de-escalate the situation, according to media reports on Monday. These decisions were made at a special meeting of the Corps Commanders chaired by Pakistan Army chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani on Saturday. The commanders vowed to resist US demands for an offensive against the Haqqanis.
