Moderate earthquake jolts Pakistan's capital, northwestern parts, no injuries reported
The tremors of an earthquake in Afghanistan has forced new Indian Premier League team Gujarat Lions to evacuate their hotel on the eve of their first match in the competition. The National Centre for Seismology in India has reported the epicentre of the earthquake to be in the Hindukush mountain range on the border of Afghanistan and Pakistan. The quake measured 6.8 on the Richter scale. The aftershocks were throughout northern India, including Chandigarh were the Lions are set to face home side Kings XI Punjab at the PCA Stadium on Monday. Moments after the earthquake hit, the Gujarat players and support staff were whisked out of the building by team management and to a safe area outside. "I was sitting on the end of my bed fixing a cricket bat and it felt like the bed started to move," the Lions' Australian paceman Andrew Tye told cricket.com.au outside the hotel.
'Quake didn't cause much change in geography,'says Dr Stuart Sipkin, Director, World Data Centre for Seismology at the US Geological Survey.
A moderate intensity earthquake, with epicentre in Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan, shook Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir and other parts of North India in the wee hours of Saturday.
According to the Regional Seismological Bureau, the epicentre of the quake, which occurred at 0505 IST, was at the Halajun township, 126 km northeast of the county town of Artux.
According to Indian meteorological department, tremors were felt in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Haryana and Punjab, lasting for a minute, triggering panic and forcing people to rush out of their homes and offices. There was no official word about casualties from any of the states but reports from West Bengal said cracks appeared in several multi-storeyed buildings in Siliguri in north Bengal. An incident of wall collapse was reported from Telipara in Jalpaiguri district.
Its intensity surpassed that of other quakes in recent times and it was felt in the north Bengal region too.
The region has seen nine quakes since Sunday. Of these, one was recorded in North Sumatra region in Indonesia while others have been recorded in and around the Andaman and Nicobar islands.
According to J L Gautam, Operations Head of National Centre for Seismology, "The earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale at a depth of 190 km hit Hindukush mountain region at 3:58 pm."
Four fresh tremors on Sunday jolted Nepal, triggering panic among the people already battered by the devastating earthquake and over 150 aftershocks as the death toll crossed 8,000.
There were no immediate reports of any loss of life or damage to property.
