Six days after it witnessed the worst floods in its history, Surat Monday limped back to normalcy. Water and electricity sevices which were affected due to the week-long floods have been restored, officials said.
South Gujarat Vij Company has restored power supply to 3,95,490 domestic connections of the total 4,37,290 affected, they said. All the four water works in the city have started normal water supply. 401 water tankers are deployed to supply drinking water to the worst affected areas of the city, he added.
Authorities have also started a massive clean-up drive in the city, from where people started fleeing in large numbers amid fears of an epidemic. "As much as 9,795 tonnes of solid waste has been removed from the roads with the help of 202 dumpers and trucks, 107 tractors and trailers and 106 earth movers," officials said.
"More than 60,000 kg of DDT and 517 tonnes of other disinfectants are being supplied to the health and sanitary staff... 1140 tons of powder and 414 liters of disinfectants have been sprinkled in the city till today," an official supervising the enormous clean-up drive said.
Health officials have also distributed more than seven lakh chlorine tablets. The authorities who have removed over 1,130 carcasses of dead animals from various parts of city, also culled over 8,275 chickens from a farm in Athwa as a preventive measure.
