In an effort to promote disaster preparedness, earthquake monitoring laboratories are being set up in around 100 schools in seismic prone zones of the country.

The laboratories are being set up as part of the Mission Mode Project on Seismology under the Tenth Plan, an official release said in New Delhi on Wednesday.

Called the National School Seismology Project, it is an experimental programme being initiated for the first time in the country.

"The rationale behind the setting up of these facilities is to promote observational and measuring skills as well as creating an awareness among students about earthquake activity and disaster preparedness in their neighbourhood," the release said.
