A total of 150 people, displaced due to the recent violence at Nandigram [Images], returned home in Gokulnagar and Maheshpur areas escorted by police and the Central Reserve Police Force on Thursday.

The decision to send the displaced people home with adequate security was taken at a meeting convened by the district magistrate, the block development officer and the affected people on Wednesday night, BDO Shantiram Gorai told newsmen on Thursday.

The 150 men had taken refuge along with several others at a make-shift tent behind the BDO's office ever since clashes erupted in trouble-torn Nandigram in the run-up to the May 11 panchayat polls.

The CRPF and the police will patrol the areas to ensure that the people who returned home were not disturbed, he said.
