A 15-year-old boy in Chennai who claimed he was abducted has confessed to having made up the story to avoid a school test, police said on Tuesday.

The Class X boy was sent home after a warning, the police added.

The boy had made a police complaint stating that a four-member gang had abducted him in front of his school.

He said he was released a few kilometres away from the school after the gang realised that he was not the boy they intended to kidnap.

After looking into the complaint and talking to the boy's parents, the police said they found the truth.
