Vivian Richards (69), Gordon Greenidge (72), Gary Kirsten (72) and Graham Gooch (76) had recorded the distinction in less innings than Pietersen. Navjot Singh Sidhu, Brian Lara and Boeta Dippenaar had taken 79 innings each to reach 3,000 runs.
# Pietersen (111 not out) became the second English captain to post a hundred against India. Nasser Hussain had made 115 at Lord's on July 13, 2002.
