Leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed's appointment as assistant coach of the Pakistan team has been questioned by Justice Malik Mohammad Qayyum, who had blacklisted the former player in his report on the match-fixing episode.

Mushtaq was among five players who were reprimanded by Justice Qayyum after an 18-month inquiry into match-fixing allegations between 1998 and 2000.

In his report he had stated that Mushtaq, Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Inzamam-ul Haq and Aaqib Javed did not cooperate with the inquiry and should not be given any important position in Pakistan cricket.

Qayyum said he was surprised that the Pakistan Cricket Board appointed Mushtaq without keeping his recommendations in mind.

"I thought they would at least take some legal opinion before making this decision keeping in mind my report," he told a web site.

But Pakistan Cricket Board official Abbas Zaidi said it is not such a big issue.

"We have even appointed Waqar Younis as bowling coach. Inzamam is the captain right now. We even offered Wasim a coaching stint. There is no ban on these players to hold any positions," he said.

"The Qayyum report made recommendations which we are aware of. And as it is, Mushtaq's contract is only for the Champions Trophy in India and he is not an active playing member of the team."

Zaidi also pointed out that Mushtaq played for English county Sussex for the last three years and no objection was raised.
