Air India on Sunday said that 87 bodies have been handed over to the family members and relatives of the passengers who died in the Mangalore plane crash. All the 158 bodies have been recovered from the crash site, Air India spokesperson Harpreet Singh De said. Air India was trying its best to provide all assistance to the passengers' family members, she said. An international agency for emergency response and rescue operations, US-based Kenyon, has already been contacted.

As a mark of respect to the deceased, the government cancelled all functions to celebrate the first anniversary of the second term of the United Progressive Alliance government today. Dr Singh announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh each for the families of those killed and Rs 50,000 each to those injured in the crash.

Search operations were called off on Sunday due to poor light.Though the search team could detect signals from the black box, it was unable to retrieve the box buried under the massive wreckage at the crash site. Twelve bodies of the victims of the Air India plane crash in Mangalore were yet to be identified, said AI Managing Director Arvind Jadhav. "I regret what has happened," he said, adding that AI will provide Rs 10 lakh compensation to the families of victims above the age of 12 and Rs 5 lakh for the kin of those below that age.He also announced compensation of Rs two lakh for the injured victims, but added that AI was in consultation with insurance companies.
