The body of a 22-year-old woman, who had gone missing four days ago, was found in a sugarcane field in the Kotwali Dehat area of Gonda district on Thursday, police said.

The woman had gone missing on March 29 after leaving her home around noon. After a futile search, her family members lodged a missing person's report at the local police station the following day.

According to SP Vineet Jaiswal, the body was spotted by the owner of the field, Abhilakh, when he went there for irrigation work, about 400 metres from the woman's house.

Police Investigation into Possible Murder

"The woman's hands were tied. There were also marks on the neck, suggesting the use of a sharp-edged weapon. Prima facie, it appears to be a case of murder," the SP said.

The exact cause of death will be known once the autopsy report is received, the officer said.

The woman's father, who said she did not have enmity with anyone, also alleged that she was murdered.

"We are questioning the locals and probing the case from all possible angles. The post-mortem report will provide further clarity," Jaiswal said.
