Putting aside the criticism made by Republican White House nominee John McCain against him, President George W Bush and the First Lady Laura Bush have voted for the Arizona Senator through absentee ballots for the November 4 election.

The ballots cast in the early election process are being mailed back to Texas as the president is planning to spend election night at the White House, an official said.

Meanwhile, Bush has refused to get involved in the election process indicating that he did not want to be a part of ongoing punditry.

Earlier, Senator McCain had come down heavily on the Bush administration in an effort to distance himself from the latter's policies over the last eight years.

The opinion polls have also shown that the strategy of the McCain campaign of moving away from the policies of the Bush presidency has indeed helped the Republican contender.

In an interview with The Washington Times, McCain maintained, "We just let things get completely out of hand," over the last eight years and went on to hammer Bush on a number of issues, especially on the economy and Iraq.

"Spending, the conduct of the war in Iraq for years, growth in the size of government, larger than any time since the Great Society. Laying a $10 trillion debt on future generations of America, owing $500 billion to China, obviously, failure to both enforce and modernise the (financial) regulatory agencies that were designed for the 1930s and certainly not for the 21st century, failure to address the issue of climate change seriously," Senator McCain said.

McCain also criticised Bush for supporting the Medicare Prescription Drug Bill.
