A group of 32 illegal migrants from India were recently intercepted in Ukraine, officials in Delhi said on Tuesday highlighting the rising trend of people from India, particularly from Punjab, travelling illegally to Europe through the Central Asian country.
Five illegal migrants from India were intercepted by the Interior Ministry of Ukraine, they said.
They narrated the tales of horror they faced along with 27 other Indians, who also were detected, officials said.
Such migrants often find their dreams shattered as they face a lot of hardship, including torture, at the hands of agents and others who exploit them on knowing about their illegal status, they said.
The torture they faced included beating and denial of water, food and proper shelter, they said.
Besides, the agents and, in some cases, anti-social elements seized all their money.
Ukraine has been found to be a prominent route for such illegal migration. The illegal migrants after detection and verification of their nationality, are deported back home with the help of Indian embassy.
