The Centre is planning to set up a regulatory authority to monitor the content on TV channels, Information and Broadcasting Minister S Jaipal Reddy said on Monday.

He said he hoped to introduce a legislation in the next Parliament session.

Responding to supplementaries during Question Hour, Reddy said there was no proposal to introduce TV censorship. However, a proposal to set up an authority to regulate the content was under consideration, he said.

The decision was taken following last month's workshop on TV content in which TV channel owners, media heads and representatives of cable operators, non-governmental organisations, women and consumer organisations took part.

Reddy said participants were of the view that self-regulation by the industry was the ideal solution. However, consensus favoured establishing an autonomous regulatory authority.
