Opium worth ₹70 lakh and a country-made pistol were seized from an SUV after it crashed into a traffic island in Navi Mumbai, police said on Saturday.
The SUV driver abandoned the mangled Rajasthan-registered vehicle on Palm Beach Road and fled the scene following the crash that occurred around 4.30 am on Friday, Inspector (Crime) Bhaskar Kokare said.
Discovery of the Contraband
"Our team noticed a pungent smell coming from the vehicle and discovered three plastic sacks containing 69 kg of opium in the boot. They also found a loaded country-made pistol on the dashboard," he said.
Legal Action Initiated
A case has been registered against the unidentified driver under the NDPS Act, the Arms Act, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and the Motor Vehicle Act, the official added.
