Mizoram Police Bust Drug Smuggling Rings, Recover ₹25 Crore in Narcotics

Mizoram police have successfully dismantled several drug smuggling networks, seizing a substantial ₹25.01 crore worth of narcotics and apprehending eight individuals in a major crackdown on illegal drug trade.

Mizoram police have dismantled multiple smuggling modules over the past week, seizing narcotics, particularly heroin and methamphetamine, valued at Rs 25.01 crore at different locations in the state, a senior officer said.

The crackdown, spanning from March 25 to March 31, resulted in the arrest of 8 people, including two Myanmar nationals, four from Manipur and one from Assam, Inspector General of Police (Headquarters) H Ramthlengliana said.

 

The most significant operation took place on the morning of March 25, when the CID (Special Branch) operation team intercepted a truck at Tuirial Bridge near Aizawl.

A meticulous search of the truck, which was proceeding towards Aizawl from Seiling in Saitual district, revealed 19.836 kg of Methamphetamine (Yaba) tablets valued at Rs 15.86 crore, he said in a statement on Wednesday.

The police also recovered a US-manufactured handgun, along with two magazines and 40 live rounds.

The 23-year-old driver, a resident of east Mizoram's Champhai district on the Indo-Myanmar border, was taken into custody, he said.

Drug Seizures in Saitual District

Ramthlengliana said that in three operations near Keifang in Saitual district between March 27 and March 29, police teams intercepted three vehicles, leading to the recovery of 4.46 kg of heroin altogether worth Rs 8.93 crore.

Four residents of Manipur and one from Assam were arrested in Keifang.

Arrests in Zembawk Area

In another operation on March 31, two Myanmarese nationals were arrested in Zembawk area in Aizawl for possessing 104 grams of heroin valued at Rs 20.4 lakh.

The IGP said that multiple cases have been registered against the eight accused under the Narcotic Drugs & Psychotropic Substances Act, the Arms Act, and the Immigration and Foreigners Act.
