The two news channels reprimanded for broadcasting an objectionable video of Mahatma Gandhi on Monday tendered a written apology to the government.

"The two channels tendered a written apology to the Information and Broadcasting ministry after they were issued show-cause notices for telecasting the video," a source in the ministry said.

The channels -- IBN7 and Sahara -- said their intention was not to hurt the sentiments of the public, the source added.

Taking a serious view of the news channels telecasting the objectionable video, picked up from website youtube.com, the go
vernment had on Friday dashed off show-cause
notice to them, asking them to explain their position by Monday.

Information and Broadcasting Minister P R Dasmunsi said the telecast tantamount to 'an assault to the dignity of the Father of the Nation.'

Asked whether the ministry will pursue with action against the channels, which can include prohibition on their telecast for a limited period, the source said, "The competent authority is seized of the matter and will decide how to proceed further."
