The government has sanctioned more battalions for the Border Security Force to meet the manpower requirement of the paramilitary force manning the eastern and western borders of the country.

There was a need for more men and officers in the BSF and the "process to raise more battalions are underway", Home Minister Shivraj Patil said at the inaugural session of the BSF annual training conference.

The minister also assured that the force will be provided with all assistance to improve its standard of training and for formation of adequate reserve battalions.

Stressing that there was a need to evolve better training and preparedness to meet the growing challenges, he said the government will soon convene a meeting of the heads of all training institutes to discuss related issues.

Later talking to reporters, he underscored the need for formulation of a futuristic training programme to meet the emerging security situation in the country.

"The officers will deliberate on issues related to training for the next two days and will submit the outcome of the meeting to the government. We will then take steps to improve training after consultation with everyone," he said.
