Sudheendra Kulkarni, political secretary to Bharatiya Janata Party president L K Advani, resigned on Sunday afternoon after his role came under attack during a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh meeting in Surat.

Advani has accepted the resignation.

Kulkarni, once one of the most powerful men in the BJP particularly after he was inducted as political secretary, had written a letter to Advani on June 24 which was leaked out to the media on Friday.

In the letter, he attacked the Sangh Parivar for its stand on Jinnah.

"The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh must realise that the people of India do not like to see their leaders remote controlled by an external entity," Kulkarni said in the letter.

Kulkarni was attributed to have written the controversial speech that Advani read out in Pakistan wherein Mohammad Ali Jinnah had been described as a secular leader.

He came under attack for what he called his private view in which he said that the BJP cannot come to power without the help of the Muslims.

Kulkarni denied that he had leaked out June 24 letter to the media.

It's release was planned so that RSS could discuss the contents of his letter in the Surat meeting.

Senior BJP leaders refrained from making immediate comment on Kulkarni's resignation.
