Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader and former deputy prime minister Lal Kishenchand Advani on Friday described the Nithari killings as a "shameful incident" for the country and stressed on the need for an inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation into the case.

Speaking to reporters at the airport in Indore, he said police did not wake up to the crimes even though the number of children going missing had been steadily increasing.

"It is a heart-rending incident that skeletons were recovered one after the other from the spot," Advani said.

Noting that it was not proper to view the incident with a political angle, the BJP leader said an inquiry by an independent agency was required.

Advani said the law, order, violence and goondaraj would be the main poll planks in the upcoming Uttar Pradesh assembly elections.
