Fulfilling a major poll promise, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi launched the Rs 2 per kg PDS rice scheme on his 84th birthday on Saturday.

Distributing rice bags to six family cardholders, including three women, at a PDS shop in a lower income group housing colony, he assured the people that all the promises contained in the DMK manifesto would be implemented.

Keeping another poll promise, he distributed cheques for Rs 15,000 to three families under a marriage assistance scheme to mark its re-launch.

The chief minister also announced that the government was in the process of implementing another major poll promise -- distribution of 2 acres of land to the landless poor.
