A 5.8-magnitude quake hits off Indonesia's Sumatra island

A strong earthquake struck off the northern coast of Sumatra island in Indonesia on Friday morning, seismologists in Hong Kong said.

The 5.8-magnitude quake's epicenter was about 290 km southwest of Medan in western Sumatra, the Hong Kong Observatory reported. The tremor hit at 0048 GMT, the report said.
