Nearly 300 jawans stuck in J&K tunnel

At a time when Jammu and Kashmir [Images] is battling the worst snowstorm in years, Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed is in New Delhi to inaugurate a photo exhibition listing out his government's achievements.

The CM arrived in New Delhi on Sunday night for the exhibition, organised by his government's information department.

At the time of filing this report, there are nearly 300 security personnel stuck inside Jawahar Tunnel on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway. There have taken shelter there to protect themselves from avalanches.

"Early this morning, as the skies showed signs of improvement, helicopter sorties were carried out to drop food packets to the soldiers," a defence official told rediff.com on Monday.

"The soldiers are from ITBP, BRO and local police," he added.

Nearly 14ft of snow has accumulated near the tunnel, he said, adding that efforts are on the clear the road.
