A 14-year-old schoolboy was warned and let off by the Chennai police on Monday after he lodged a false complaint that a gang had kidnapped him.

According to the police, the boy entered the Triplicane police station at 1100 IST and complained that he was abducted from near his school by a four-member gang. He said the gang, once it realised he was not the boy they were looking for, dropped him near Gaity Theatre on Anna Salai.

The police saw the boy was inconsistent in his versions. On interrogation, the boy confessed that he was actually anxious about an approaching exam and had hit upon the kidnapping idea to duck the exam.
