Rain forces change in Sonia's Maharashtra schedule

August 11, 2004 13:32 IST

United Progressive Alliance chairperson and Congress president Sonia Gandhi today called off her visit to the tribal-dominated region of Akkalkua in Maharashtra's Nandurbur district due to inclement weather.

"Ms Gandhi has cancelled her visit to Akkalkua in view of incessant rains and cloudy conditions," superintendent of police Pradeep Deshpande told PTI. However, she would visit the Vidarbha region as scheduled, he added.

Gandhi was scheduled to visit a rural hospital in Akkalkua to make a first-hand assessment of the reported malnutrition deaths in the state, besides interacting with party members. She would now reach Nagpur from Delhi and visit Amravati and Wardha districts.
