Madhumita case: CBI yet to get DNA test report

September 07, 2003 19:02 IST

Central Bureau of Investigation Director P C Sharma on Sunday said the agency, investigating into the murder of poetess Madhumita Shukla, was yet to receive the DNA test report of her foetus and blood sample of former Bahujan Samaj Party minister Amarmani Tripathi.

"We are awaiting the DNA test report," Sharma said when asked in Kolkata to comment on recent media reports that the DNA of the six-month-old foetus of the slain poetess had matched with that of the former minister's.

"Everyday we are contacting the Hyderabad laboratory and expect to receive the report in another three-four days," he said.

Sharma said the agency has already questioned Tripathi and his wife Madhumani in connection with the case. "We have also got some letters, a diary and some other evidence. But the most important will be what the DNA report says," he added.

Madhumita was shot dead by assailants at her Lucknow residence in May. She was reportedly close to Tripathi. The murder created an uproar in Uttar Pradesh leading to the unceremonious exit of Tripathi from the cabinet of the then chief minister Mayawati. He has now extended support to Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav.
