Eight police officials, including an inspector general of police, have been arrested so far in connection with the scam.

Shinde, who returned from Delhi on Tuesday morning, headed straight for the Raj Bhawan. The chief minister was earlier scheduled to meet the governor in the afternoon.

Shinde's government is under tremendous pressure from the opposition on the issue of corruption. On Monday, top opposition leaders called on Fazal and demanded the resignation of Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal, who also holds the home portfolio.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Shinde rejected the opposition demand for a CBI probe into the scam. "The SIT [Special Investigating Team] is doing a commendable job and I have full confidence in it. The SIT's integrity is beyond doubt as they have arrested senior police personnel in this connection," he said.

Bhujbal had met the governor on Monday to clarify his position.
