be borne by his son: Karunanidhi

June 19, 2003 02:12 IST

Dravida Munnetra Kazhaghan president M Karunanidhi has written to Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, stating that the entire expenditure on the treatment of ailing Union Minister Murasoli Maran would be borne by his son.

"Though it is the practice of the Central government to bear the medical expenses of its ministers, Kalanidhi Maran has decided to bear the entire medical expenditure of his father," the DMK leader said in a statement in Chennai on Wednesday night.

Karunanidhi, who is Murasoli Maran's uncle, also pointed out that the expenditure being incurred by Maran's family members, now in the United States, and the expenses for his treatment in the Apollo Hospital in Chennai had also been met by Kalanidhi Maran.

Maran has been undergoing specialised treatment at the Methodist Hospital in Houston (US) since November 2002.
