Rajju Bhaiyya cremated in Pune

The mortal remains of veteran Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh leader and former Sarsanghchalak Rajendra Singh alias Rajju Bhaiyya were consigned to flames at Vainkunth crematorium in Pune on Tuesday evening.

The last rites were performed at 1900 hours IST in the presence of top political leaders, including Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Deputy Prime Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani and Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat and Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

Mortal remains of the veteran leader being carried in a truck. Photo: Deepak SalviAmid chanting of Jai Ram, Jai Jai Ram, the body of Rajju Bhaiyya was taken in a flower-bedecked truck at 1700 hours IST from Navi Marathi Shala in Shaniwar Peth to the crematorium in a huge procession.

The RSS chief, K Sudershan, also sat on the truck near the body.

Earlier, thousands of people and RSS workers converged at Navi Marathi Shala to pay their last respect to Rajju Bhaiyya who passed away on Monday following a protracted illness.

Advani, Mahajan and Shekhawat also paid floral tributes.

The procession passed through Shinde Park Chowk, Mankeshwar Chowk, Umbarya Ganpati Chowk, Laxmi Road, Alka Talkies chowk and Lal Bahadur Shastri chowk.
