EC prepared to hold UP polls

August 25, 2003 19:41 IST

The Election Commission has denied reports that it is not prepared to conduct elections in Uttar Pradesh in November-December this year.

The Commission said that in the context of political developments in UP, some sections of the media, including the electronic media, had reported it was not prepared to conduct elections in the state in November-December.

'The Commission categorically denies all such reports as the Uttar Pradesh legislative assembly continues to exist,' it said in a statement.

Earlier, Commission sources had said holding assembly polls in UP along with those in five states in November-December may not be possible on account of difficulties in updating electoral rolls in the state.
