A 24-year-old American girl was allegedly gangraped by four fishermen at Ghatshila in East Singhbhum district in Jharkhand on Saturday night, a senior police official said in Jamshedpur.

Superintendent of Police Arun Oraon said the accused have been arrested and they have confessed to the crime. The victim has also identified them, he said.

The girl, associated with four Kolkata-based NGOs, was allegedly raped on the bank of the Swarnarekha river, Oraon said.

The victim, who arrived in Ghatsila on Saturday, had ventured out to the river bank alone to view the sunset, he said.

Oraon said the victim refused to go through any medical examination before leaving for Kolkata.
