Are films critic-proof?

Well, some definitely are.

If one goes by the commercial response to some recent blockbusters, there have been numerous instances where audiences have lapped up what was offered to them despite critics panning them big time.

Joginder Tuteja lists films that were severely criticised and yet, emerged blockbusters.

Kabir Singh
Box office collection: Rs 278.24 crore

One of the most controversial films of 2019, Kabir Singh raked up a storm when it released.

But all that name-calling only made audiences more curious to watch it and see what the Shahid Kapoor and Kiara Advani starrer had to offer.

It turned out to be an all-time blockbuster and Shahid's biggest solo hit till date.

Housefull 4
Box office collection: Rs 208.50 crore

Sajid Nadiadwala's Housefull franchise has never really been received kindly by critics. Yet, it went on to get a fourth installment.

Housefull 4 was the worst-received film in the series and for a time, it seemed that the film would fail. But it saw a major turnaround and emerged as a superhit.

Happy New Year
Box office collection: Rs 205 crore

Happy New Year probably saw the worst review for a Shah Rukh Khan hit.

Still, Farah Khan's directorial took the biggest opening ever in the superstar's career.

Sadly, this is the last big hit the actor has delivered.

Bang Bang
Box office collection: Rs 181 crore

Director Siddharth Anand's Bang Bang was an official remake of the Tom Cruise-Cameron Diaz starrer Knight and Day.

Strangely, even that film was badly received by critics and the Hindi film did not escape that fate.

Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif made sure the film looked good and the action was high. The chartbuster music did the trick as well.

Bodyguard
Box office collection: Rs 149 crore

Right in the middle of Salman Khan's winning streak, when he was delivering back-to-back blockbusters, came Bodyguard.

A remake of its Malayalam namesake, this paired Kareena Kapoor opposite Salman and boasted of good music and action.

But critics did not find it impressive.

Judwaa 2
Box office collection: Rs 138.61 crore

Judwaa 2 was Varun Dhawan's last big superhit as it comfortably sailed past the Rs 100 crore mark.

But critics were largely left unhappy with the redux version of the Salman Khan hit, also directed by David Dhawan.

Ready
Box office collection: Rs 120 crore

Just after Salman Khan's winning streak started with Dabangg came Anees Bazmee's Ready.

A remake of its namesake Telugu film with Asin as leading lady, it was a family film with a lot of humour and chartbuster music.

Critics found it nonsensical and weren't too kind to it.

Grand Masti
Box office collection: Rs 102 crore

It's very hard to get a sex comedy right, and it's one of those genres that Bollywood hasn't perfected yet. But it's also a genre that works at the box office.

So Director Indra Kumar and his cast of Riteish Deshmukh, Vivek Oberoi and Aftab Shivdasani were not really worried when Grand Masti fetched poor reviews.

What was surprising though was that the adult film entered the Rs 100 crore club.
