Gujarat take sizeable lead

December 06, 2004 22:39 IST

Fiery bowling by Lalit Patel, who scalped five batsmen, helped Gujarat bundle out Railways for 200 in 101.3 overs on the third day of the Ranji Trophy Elite Division Group A match the Motera stadium in Ahmedabad on Monday.

The home team, who made 384 in their first innings, thus took a handy first innings lead of 184 runs over the visitors and then increased it to 209 by making 25 without loss in their second innings before stumps. Railways began in disastrous fashion.

Resuming their innings on 62 for 2, the batting line-up further deteriorated in the face of the Gujarat pace trio of Siddharth Trivedi, Lalit Patel and Hitesh Majumdar.

They lost Amit Pagnis (1), when he was caught by Timil Patel off L Patel, and his opening partner Sanjay Bangar (8), also to the Gujarat opening bowler. T P Singh rescued the tottering innings with an attractive 47, with seven hits to the fence, before he was caught nudging Timil Patel by Niraj Patel.

But for T P Singh and Sidharth Verma (46), there was little of note in the Railways first innings as the other batsmen caved in meekly against Lalit Patel (5 for 58), Siddharth Trivedi (2 for 38), Hitesh Majmudar (2 for 44) and Timil Patel (1 for 42).

In the second innings, Gujarat scraped through 12 overs in the day without any casualty. At the close of play on the third day, Nilesh Modi was batting on 11 and Akash Christian on 14.
