Waugh century leads Australian fightback

January 03, 2003 13:38 IST

Australian captain Steve Waugh smashed a four off the last ball of the day on Friday to complete an unbeaten century after becoming just the third player in history to pass 10,000 Test runs on the second day of the final Ashes Test against England.

Waugh hit a total of 18 boundaries to match Don Bradman's Australian record of 29 test hundreds and join Allan Border and Sunil Gavaskar as the only players to pass the magical milestone of 10,000 runs.

Waugh's 102 helped Australia recover from 45 for three to finish the day at 237 for five, 125 behind England's first innings total of 362 with five wickets in hand.

Adam Gilchrist was unbeaten on 45 after sharing an unbroken 87-run partnership with his captain.

Earlier, veteran wicketkeeper Alec Stewart ignored the draining effects of chickenpox to score 71 before England lost their last five wickets for 30 runs to be all out for 362 after starting the day on 264-5.

Along the way, Stewart overtook Geoff Boycott as England's third highest runscorer of all time, taking his career total to 8,149.
