The Central Bureau of Investigation is still groping in the dark on the veracity of the reports of detention of Anees Ibrahim, brother of mob boss Dawood Ibrahim, in Saudi Arabia as authorities in Riyadh were still to respond to its query.

The CBI had sent in a reminder of its Tuesday's communication where the agency had sought a confirmation about the detention of Anees, against whom an Interpol red corner notice was issued at the instance of the Indian agency, at the Jeddah airport.

"We have again approached the Saudi authorities today after they were asked about the same yesterday," a senior CBI official said, adding the Indian consulate general in Jeddah and the mission in Riyadh was also trying to seek clarification about Anees' arrest from the airport.

Anees is wanted by the CBI for his involvement in the 1993 serial bomb blasts in Mumbai.

He was detained earlier in Dubai in 2002 after which he was bailed out and deported back to Pakistan despite the CBI sending an extradition request alleging that he was one of the main conspirators of the blasts in Mumbai.

The CBI had also mentioned Anees' involvement in bringing youths to Dubai and later sending them to Karachi for training.

The youths, after being trained in Karachi were, received by Anees and later shifted to Mumbai for carrying out the attacks on selected places in the country.

Besides his involvement in the Mumbai blasts, Anees is also wanted in nearly 70 cases of murder, attempt to murder, extortion and kidnapping for ransom.

Anees was detained by Dubai authorities in 1996, but was later let off for want of evidence. He was again arrested in Bahrain in the late 90s, but was later shifted to Dubai, from where he was released.
